Details

Focusing both on figurative and abstract oil painting, Charlie Rugg’s work converges on exploring the collective nature of elements that make up human experience, and how they may be used to create a moment of perspective removed from the self. Rugg’s And Also… exhibition highlights our instinct to construct and define existence around story and the shape of the emergent narrative that comes to life when our stories are viewed as one.

About the Artist
Charlie Rugg is an abstract and portrait oil painter based in San Luis Obispo, California. His first career in professional soccer originally brought him from Boston to California, where he spent three years with the LA Galaxy followed by a year and a half playing for two clubs in Germany. He maintained a relationship with painting throughout his playing career, focusing mainly on oil portraits, but since retiring from soccer, he’s moved on to work in both design and oil painting. Charlie often loosely structures his abstract work in pattern, allowing some elements to interact freely as a piece takes form. He parallels this process of contained freedom to the nature of emergent systems and the feeling behind the life-like characters that they become.
