Artist: Hernán Castellano Girón (b. 1937)

Hernán Castellano Girón was born in Chile. He left during the Pinochet dictatorship and went first to Italy and then the United States. After finishing his doctoral degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, he was offered a teaching position in Cal Poly’s English Department. Mr. Castellano-Girón became Poet Laurette of San Luis Obispo in 2000-2001. In 2007, the artist-poet returned to Chile where he still paints and writes poetry.

This painting was donated to the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art’s permanent collection by Suzanne Lord in 2014. A colleague at Cal Poly, the donor states, “This painting is part of a series of dream paintings. Hernán is a surrealist painter, poet and filmmaker.”
