Hello Friends,

SLOMA Executive Director Leann Standish. A woman with long blonde hair wearing a green shirt and black jacket. As the moving Whose Waters? exhibition draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the dozens of people who have shared their excitement over the show, many with personal stories of how the show made them feel. This thoughtful exhibition really connected with people — surfers and non-surfers alike who have at times felt like an outsider.

I am so honored by what SLOMA has come to mean to the more than 50,000 annual visitors who come through our doors each year. Guests are transported through time and space and culture — each experiencing their own unique connection to the art and to the moment, each finding their voice and discovering why art matters to them.

We have really found our stride with our public programs complementing our exhibitions: surfboard swaps, tea ceremonies, yoga classes and more, all offering opportunities to find the common threads that bind us to one another. April Banks’ stirring Tidewalker installation has become a conversation starter and a downtown landmark, and MOMO’s Meter & Time mural draws in selfie-seekers and brightens the mood of all who pass by.

By the way: Did you know that for each of the annual murals, we invited the artist to share the playlist that they listened to while installing the piece? You can check out MOMO’s eclectic soundtrack HERE.

And so, as we anxiously await the arrival of autumn, we ready ourselves for beautiful new offerings in the galleries as well. Whitney Bedford’s The Window is our first paintings show in a while and well worth the wait. Whitney was consistently recognized as one of the darlings of this year’s Frieze Art Fair. You won’t want to miss the member preview on October 25. Members and their guests are invited to RSVP HERE. Not a member yet? Join us!

In November, we’ll reveal a piece commissioned specifically for the Nybak Gallery by the enigmatic Julie Alpert, whose bold works always spark delight. Julie will lead a special walk through with guests on Friday, November 15. This special off-cycle exhibition opening will run from 5–8 PM and is open to the public: RSVP HERE. Special thanks to our friends at Herman Story Wines for pouring at the opening reception.

As always, we are so very grateful for your support of SLOMA and eager to see you in the galleries.

Warmly,

Leann Standish
SLOMA Executive Director
