2024-2025

Details

This year’s mural installation will take place between July 22 and August 17 by internationally recognized artist MOMO.

Meter & Time, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art’s 2024 mural, wraps around all four walls of the Museum’s building. MOMO considers this work a “best of” representing his diverse creative processes and techniques from his decades-long practice, gathering them together and putting them in one space. Using homemade systems and tools, practical geometry research, color theory, pattern work, and halftones, Meter & Time offers the community a concrete and sensual experience. The mural uses waves of colors, harmonies, and frequencies that mimic the experience of listening to music or going to a concert. In each unique wall, offering its own complexities and colors, you can see something new every day — this work simultaneously invites close looking, but doesn’t dominate or demand your attention. Architecture is often described as frozen music with its repeating metrics and motifs. MOMO’s Meter & Time builds on the architecture of the Museum’s building and surrounding landscape, with a respite of harmonies, rhythms, and play — like a song without lyrics.

About the Artist
MOMO is an American artist who began his experimental outdoor work in the late 90s, working with homemade tools and borrowed public space. Ten years of free-ranging projects, centered around adapted masonry techniques, strategies based on collage, computer code, and seriality, came to form the basis of his visual language. This language finds its expression in paint, on commissioned walls, and in studio work from 2009 to the present day.

Notable mural commissions include those from Facebook, Pepsi, the NFL, the World Trade Center, John Hancock Tower, Art Production Fund NY, the European Capital of Culture, the NYC DOT, and Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3. However, self-organized walls in Jamaica, Sicily, Arizona, Sri Lanka, India, Philippines, Cambodia, and Australia (2013, 2016, 2018, 2023, 2024), painted at the artist’s expense, have been important in demonstrating innovative techniques for a general audience free of the usual commercial concerns.
