A Message From The Director

In a few weeks, we will celebrate SLOMA’s one-year anniversary of reopening after an extended closure because of COVID. Between March 2020 and May 2021, your Museum of Art, like so many cultural organizations around the world, shut its doors in the face of the global pandemic. On May 29, 2021, we emerged with a refreshed facility, a renewed sense of purpose, and an amazing lineup of exhibitions and programs.

Over the past year, we have sought ways to expand arts access and engagement throughout the communities throughout the region: as the only art museum between Monterey and Santa Barbara, we partnered with the City of SLO to bring new public art to San Luis Obispo, we brought the works of international artists like Faig Ahmed to the Central Coast, and we re-imagined our education programming to make it more reflective of our exhibitions and accessible to diverse audiences.

These new initiatives are working: over the past year, we’ve given out 2500 FREE art activity kits through our Second Saturdays, school tours, and community partner programs. New murals and sculptures are popping up around the city (and on our building!). Attendance has increased by more than 30% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

SLOMA is a place to discover amazing art from around the corner and around the world. A place where regional artists and art lovers can gather and experience something new. A place for kids to explore their imaginations and find new ways of creative expression. In the wake of two very difficult years, SLO County has proven that the arts are an essential part of life here on the Central Coast. Thank you for your invaluable support and we’ll see you at the Museum!
