For 52 years, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art has sponsored a spring high school portfolio competition. For any art student, creating a portfolio with a serious body of art is an important exercise in synthesis and the culmination of a year of creative output. Artwork is judged by originality, craftsmanship, and the quality of the whole portfolio.
The Museum of Art’s goal as host of this competition is to foster meaningful creative endeavors among high school juniors and seniors throughout SLO County and to arm them with the tools to embark on a career in the arts. The artwork from this year’s competition winners and participants will be exhibited in the Nybak Wing from May 16 to May 26.
The criteria for judging student work is based on originality, craftsmanship, and the overall quality of the portfolio, which must contain five original artworks in any medium, including video.
An opening reception and announcement of awards will take place on Thursday, May 16 from 4:30 to 6 PM. Artists are encouraged to pick up their portfolios between 11 AM and 5 PM on Sunday, May 26.
