Reopening Soon: The countdown has begun and we cannot wait to welcome you into the Museum’s newly refreshed spaces! Thanks to generous support from the Harold J. Miossi Trust, your San Luis Obispo Museum of Art has been significantly transformed. While we had previously planned to try and open on May 7, we’ve pushed our opening back to month’s end and in doing so, we were able to finish one last improvement to the galleries. Members: make sure to save the date for our exclusive Member Preview on Friday, May 28 (invitation to follow).
Upcoming Exhibition: Opening at the end of the month in the Gray Wing, Atmospheres Deep is a multimedia group exhibition presented in collaboration with SUPERCOLLIDER, an LA-based collaborative that brings together leading artists and scientists to create immersive and thought provoking installations. The artworks included in the exhibition present the feeling of increasing atmospheric pressure experienced during ocean exploration. The show draws powerful parallels between the real and psychological pressure we experience in reaction to an impending ecological tipping point for oceans, leading to irreversible loss of the overall health of marine ecosystems. One further delay in re-opening that is certainly worth noting: our Atmospheres Deep Guest Curator Richelle Gribble is traveling to the Kennedy Space Center to launch an artwork inspired by aquatic species to the stratosphere!
Welcome to the Team: We have so many exciting developments as we prepare to open our doors once again. Officially joining the Museum staff this month, Emma Saperstein will be serving as Chief Curator and Director of K–12 Programming. Emma’s professionalism, curiosity, and energy have taken her all over the world and we are so incredibly lucky to have her at SLOMA.
Speaking of lucky: this week we formally welcomed a brand new class of extraordinary members to our Board of Directors:
Barbara Bell, Designer
Ermina Karim, Guaranteed Rate
Trudie Safreno, Trust Automation
Lindsey Stephenson, City of San Luis Obispo
Philip Williams, Cal Poly
